Institut Teknologi Massachusetts (Massachusetts Institute of Technology atau MIT), adalah institusi riset swasta dan universitas yang terletak di kota Cambridge, Massachusetts tepat di seberang Sungai Charles dari distrik Back Bay di Boston, Amerika Serikat. MIT memiliki 5 sekolah dan satu kolese, mencakup 32 departemen yang mengkhususkan diri pada sains dan penelitian teknologi.

Didirikan tahun 1861 sebagai respon atas kemajuan teknologi dan industri di Amerika pada saat itu, universitas ini mengadopsi universitas riset ala Eropa. MIT sekarang berdiri di atas tanah seluas 168 are yang dibuka 1916. Dalam kurun waktu 60 tahun belakangan ini, MIT telah mengembangkan cabang lain sepertimanajemen, ekonomi, manajemen, ilmu politik, dan biologi.

Departemen dan sekolah yang paling terkenal adalah Lincoln Laboratory, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Media Lab, Whitehead Institute dan Sloan School of Management. 59 dari anggota dari komunitas MIT telah memenangkan Penghargaan Nobel.

Untuk tahun ajaran 2009-2010, MIT memiliki 4,232 mahasiswa sarjana dan 6,152 mahasiswa pascasarjana.

Kampus MIT Terbagi menjadi 2 bagian oleh Massachusetts Avenue, dengan asrama mahasiswa dan fasilitas untuk mahasiswa terdapat di sebelah barat dan sekolahnya di sebelah timur. Juga terdapat jaringan kereta api dekat Kendall Square yang terletak di sebelah timur laut kampus ini. Di sekeliling bangunan kampusnya terdapat banyak sekali perusahaan teknologi.

Reaktor Nuklir MIT merupakan salah satu reaktor nuklir yang berbasis universitas terbesar di Amerika Serikat. Munculnya gedung reaktor di kawasan padat populasi ini memang agak kontroversial, tapi MIT mengatakan bahwa gedungnya sudah dalam pengawasan ketat. Kampus MIT juga memiliki terowongan angin bertekanan dan sebuah model kapal cekungan untuk mengetes kapal dan benda-benda kelautan. Jaringan nirkabel dalam kampus MIT sudah diselesaikan musim gugur 2005 yang bisa menjangkau lebih dari 873.000 m2 kawasan kampusnya.

Nah, setelah nyari-nyari info lagi, ternyata udah ada lagi pelajar kita yang sukses menembus MIT taun ini. Berikut info dari Okezone.com:

MEDAN – Lagi-lagi putri asal Kota Medan meraih prestasi membanggakan. Kali ini, alumni SMA Sutomo 1 Ivana Polim berhasil masuk ke salah satu kampus terbaik di dunia, yakni Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Amerika Serikat (AS).

Gadis cantik kelahiran 27 Februari 1992 ini lolos setelah mengikuti sejumlah seleksi cukup berat dan rumit. Peraih medali emas Olimpiade Sains Nasional di Makassar 2008 ini terpilih pada Maret 2010. Minggu, 13 Juni, kemarin, gadis yang akrab disapa Ivana ini menceritakan proses dirinya masuk universitas terbaik dunia versi Webometrics itu kepada harian Seputar Indonesia. ”Saya daftar pada Desember 2009 lalu dan ujian atau tes masuk ikut di Singapura. Saya ujian Oktober dan ikut ujian TOEFL. Pada November saya ikut SAT Subject Tes, yaitu tes matematika, fisika, dan kimia,” paparnya.

Peraih medali perak International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2009 ini mengungkapkan, selain ujian beruntun itu, dia juga harus mengirimkan enam esai atau tulisan dan empat surat rekomendasi dari kepala sekolah, guru kimia, guru bahasa Inggris, dan dosen pembina olimpiade sebagai bahan pertimbangan.

”Akhirnya saya diterima pada 14 Maret 2010 untuk jurusan chemical engineering (teknik kimia),” ungkapnya. Ivana mengaku sudah ada tujuh mahasiswa asal Indonesia yang akan kuliah di MIT. ”Saya merupakan orang Medan kedua yang diterima. Orang Medan pertama merupakan kakak kelas saya Rudy Handoko Tanin, peraih medali emas olimpiade fisika IPhO 2007 dan 2008,” tandasnya. Buah hati pasangan Johan Polim dan Nella ini mengaku sangat senang masuk universitas ternama itu.

Meski begitu, dia belakangan jadi excited bercampur gugup. ”Excited-nya karena saya akan masuk ke suatu lingkungan dan bergaul dengan mahasiswa yang luar biasa. Gugupnya karena khawatir saya kewalahan dengan kurikulumnya yang katanya sangat sulit dan bikin stres,” tuturnya. Lagipula, gadis yang ingin jadi ilmuwan ini mengaku terpaksa melepaskan kesempatan mewakili Sumut di Olimpiade Sains Internasional 2010 di Jepang. Tentu saja penggemar Harry Potter sedih tidak bisa ikut.”Sebenarnya sayang sekali harus melepaskannya. Padahal, saya ingin ikut, tapi saya tidak bisa berbuat apa-apa. Soalnya,saya harus mengurus banyak hal sebelum berangkat dan semuanya bentrok dengan jadwal pelatihan olimpiadenya,” ungkapnya.

Meski begitu, dia merasa beruntung karena kedua orangtuanya memahami pilihannya. Sebab, dia tak bisa melakukan dua hal dalam waktu yang bersamaan. ”Saya beruntung bisa masuk MIT, ini berkat semua pihak, termasuk semua guru dan orangtua. Masuk MIT sebuah kebanggaan karena kampus ini yang terbaik untuk teknik. Kalau tidak dengan beasiswa, biayanya akan sangat mahal.Saya akan belajar dengan baik di MIT,” paparnya. Untuk jadwal kuliah,akan dimulai Agustus 2010. Dari seniornya, Ivana sudah mendapatkan gambaran betapa ketat dan sulitnya kuliah di MIT.Pada tahun pertama, setiap mahasiswa sudah diharuskan melakukan penelitian dan mengikuti seminar. ”Di MIT kita dituntut bukan hanya bagus dalam akademis, juga dalam sosial dan olahraga,” tandasnya.

Kepala Dinas Pendidikan Kota Medan Hasan Basri bangga ada anak Medan atau Sumut bisa kuliah di kampus terbaik dengan jalur beasiswa. ”Ivana dikenal selama ini langganan juara Olimpiade Sains, kami juga berharap sekolah, seperti SMA Sutomo terus mampu menciptakan lulusan terbaiknya. Hal yang sama seperti SMA-SMA yang lain. Sebab, ini juga merupakan kebanggaan tersendiri bagi sekolahnya,”pungkasnya.

How We Use Test Scores

Standardized tests are required for any freshman application to MIT. However, they are not the only factor, or even the most important factor.
When we get your application, we review all of your academic information - grades, scores, classes, etc - to ensure that you are prepared for MIT. In part because of the strength of our applicant pool, the majority of our applicants are very well prepared to succeed at MIT.
What this means is that you shouldn't stress out too much about your scores, because we admit people, not numbers. Seriously. That said, tests are certainly important, and you should prepare for them as best you can.

Testing Requirements

Standardized Test Requirements

All applicants must complete one test from each category

For native English speakers:

We require the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Plus Writing with the writing test. We do not prefer one over the other. In addition, we require two SAT Subject Tests: one in math (level 1 or 2), and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m). We do not have a preference as to which science you take or which level math you take.

For non-native English speakers:

You have two options: 1) take the tests required for native English speakers (see above), or 2) you may take the TOEFL and two SAT Subject Tests, one in math (level 1 or 2) and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m).
If you have been using English for less than 5 years or do not speak English at home and school, we strongly suggest that you take the TOEFL.

Score Choice

If you take the same test (SAT, ACT, or an SAT Subject Test) multiple times, we will consider the highest score achieved in each section. We do this in order to consider all applicants in their best light.
For example, if you take the SAT Reasoning Test in 11th grade and score 750 math, 700 critical reading and 650 writing, and then take the SAT again in 12th grade and score 700 math, 650 critical reading and 700 writing, only your best scores from each sitting (i.e. 750 math, 700 critical reading and 700 writing) are used in our admissions calculations.
Students are free to use the College Board's Score Choice option and the ACT's option to submit the scores of your choice.

Testing Deadlines and Reporting Scores

In order to apply for freshman admission, you must take the required tests on or before the November test date for Early Action or the January test date for Regular Action. These are the latest scores that will reach the Admissions Committee in time for review.
Your scores must be reported to us officially from the testing agency; scores you list on your application and scores appearing on your school transcript will not be considered official.
Please allow plenty of time for your scores to arrive at MIT. It takes at least 4 to 6 weeks for us to receive SAT scores. We recommend that you list MIT as a school to receive your scores when you take the test. If you are an Early Action applicant, and you take the November test, or if you take the January test, you must list MIT as a school to receive your scores or we will not receive them in time for our review.
It is important that you register for tests with the same name as you have indicated on your application or MyMIT account. Your record and test scores will not be linked in our system if the names do not match.

When To Take Which Tests

Obviously, it's vital that students take all tests on or before the deadlines. Beyond that, however, choose your test dates strategically! For example, if you will be completing high school physics, chemistry or biology before your senior year, it's very wise to take the appropriate SAT Subject Tests(s) right afterwards (usually May or June), while the material is fresh in your mind.
Many applicants do take at least one science subject test during senior year, after completing only a portion of the given course; our Admissions Committee recognizes this and judges the scores accordingly. As a general rule, however, it's best to take a subject exam just after you've completed a whole course.
The content of your math courses should determine whether you take the Level 1 or the Level 2 Math test and when (we have no preference between the two tests). Before you choose the dates for any of your tests, particularly the math test, be sure to get advice from your guidance counselor and your teachers.

Competitive Scores

We do not have cutoff or recommended scores for the ACT Plus Writing, SAT Reasoning Test, or SAT Subject Tests as scores are evaluated within an applicant's context. To view test score statistics from the most recent admissions year, visit our admissions statistics page.
Because MIT is an English medium university, language proficiency is crucial.  For this reason, we do have minimum scores for the TOEFL exam:

• IBT: 90 minimum; 100 recommended
• PBT: 577 minimum; 600 recommended

Nah, wah banget emang ye yang namanya MIT. Gw belom berekspektasi sampe ke sana sih, katanya sekolah ke luar negeri itu baiknya dari S2, dan peluangnya emang labih besar di S2...
